Many studies nowadays claim that Atkins diets might help with more than weight loss. One recent study found that this kind of low-carb diet might relieve acid reflux in obese people.
In the new study, eight obese people with acid reflux started a low-carbohydrate diet. They took only meat, eggs, hard cheeses, and nonstarchy vegetables. This helped to restrict carbohydrates to 20 grams per day.
After three to six days of diet, the people reported fewer symptoms of acid reflux. They admitted that almost all main symptoms such as burning pain in the chest and throat, acid or sour taste in the mouth, nausea, and bloating and fullness after eating started to disappear. Measurements of acidity in the lower esophagus revealed that the episodes of high acidity, which are expected immediately after eating, were significantly shorter while the people were on the diet.
These results are only preliminary but still very promising. Any way a longer study with bigger number of participants is needed for sure.
